SHUT IT! was launched at the beginning of the new academic year at the four Liverpool universities and was featured on leaflets, posters, key-rings and bus hoardings across town. The campaign was devised in response to police data identifying students as victims of repeat burglary, especially those living in shared houses. The campaign was sponsored by a prodigious number of organisations, including the Home Office Crime Reduction Programme, The University of Liverpool, Citysafe, John Moores University and Atlantic Point student accommodation.
The crucial message of the campaign is the protection of personal space. Space is therefore a key concept in the design, reflected in both the imagery and composition. Cut out images of objects most likely to be stolen evoke the potential of loss and an illustration of a house indicates likely points of burglar entry. The campaign needed to have direct appeal whilst conveying valuable advice and information. We felt that a harsh, hard-hitting approach would potentially alienate the target audience and opted instead for a friendly and contemporary design. Cartoon illustrations and a bright, fresh colour scheme provide a light-hearted entry into an important problem facing students today.
