Recently we were asked to look at the design and production of branded materials for ICT agency AIMES. Part of this job required images for a variety of leaflets and flyers, these needed to be eye catching so that people would pick up the materials, but they also needed to reflect the services that AIMES supplies.
As many of the services AIMES provide are ‘non-physical’ in nature we couldn’t produce images of specific items. It was decided that we would produce a series of abstract images, which had a scientific and technological feel to them. Specifically we chose to use fibre-optics as the subject to be photographed, as they are in essence the backbone of the technology solutions AIMES provide.
The shoot was accomplished through the use of a specially fabricated fibre-optic bundle, which was lit with a custom light source that contained a colour wheel, allowing us to easily change the colours. These were mounted in a ‘dark tent’ and shot with a macro lens to produce the appropriate magnification. The shots were taken with the aperture wide-open so that the depth of field was very shallow, in turn giving a greater sense of depth to the image.
