…in Congleton, Behaviour and Welfare Lead; Liz Griffen, and her students for inviting Lesley Seal, Senior Communications Officer from Cheshire East Council and myself to discuss our adolescent neglect campaign.
The Council and school are both creating awareness campaigns to educate people about child and adolescent neglect. Splinter is proud to have won the commission and be involved with this important project. There is little discussed or understood about exactly what child neglect is and what as a society we should do about it. So I was grateful to speak to Liz, a safeguarding and welfare specialist and her group of students, who gave up their lunchtimes to discuss the subject and give me their valuable insight on visuals, messaging and communication channels.
I was made to feel very welcome and am impressed by the students’ design savvy, creative input and clear understanding of a complex and subjective issue. Having already provided such crucial insight, we have kindly been invited for a return match to tell us what they think of our creative…fingers crossed!
I look forward to my return visit at the end of the month.

Splinter and Liverpool company Twin Vision have been busy working with schools to create Liverpool’s ‘Local Offer’ app. The ‘Local Offer’ is a new law, which states that every local authority must talk with children and young people, with special educational needs or disabilities and their families to find out what sort of support and services they need.
Tobacco Free Futures (formerly Smokefree North West) is a nationwide collaborative partnership, supported by NW Primary Care Trusts. We developed a new website to communicate their nationwide status and new brand. The site, managed by a WordPress CMS, has a wide range of features including an Events Calendar, Products Shop, a secure practitioners’ resource area, Updateable News and Twitter integration.
Commissioned by Merseytravel www.climatlantic.co.uk is a fun and easy to use website for Primary and Secondary schoolchildren, teachers, parents and guardians. The website and games promote carbon reduction activity and environmental awareness, such as turning off lights, using public transport or planting a tree.
Climatlantic is a partnership of European countries: Ireland, UK, Portugal, Spain and France, located along the Atlantic coastline and working together to reduce their collective carbon footprints. Visitors to the website’s homepage are invited to make a pledge and help save the planet. After pledging you/schools are automatically sent advice to help fulfill that pledge.
The multi-lingual website has been designed with help from Holy Spirit School in Merseyside and Connah’s Quay High school in Flintshire. The children choose the colourful funky style of the website, the cool animal characters, including their names and also helped develop the game concepts. Climatlantic’s eco-guides are called Ollie the orangutan, Ula the parrot and Roofus the polar bear and appear throughout the site and games. Thanks to the fabulous illustrator Tracy who helped bring the children’s ideas to life.
To complement the Clwydian Range site we completed at the end of 2010, we have just completed the new website for Denbighshire Countryside Service. Whether you are into walking, cycling or just want to get away and experience beautiful countryside, maybe Denbighshire is for you.
Clwydian Range, upland frontier of North Wales, is an unmistakable chain of purple heatherclad summits topped by Britain’s most dramatically situated hillforts and linked by Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail. Famous for its stunning views, this is one of the least discovered yet most welcoming and easiest to explore of the UK’s finest landscapes.
Splinter, in partnership with Hi-Clarity Communications, have just delivered a comprehensive branding development for the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Consultation sessions were held with stakeholders, staff and local businesses to ensure that local ownership of the process was shared throughout.
In particular the following outputs have been delivered:
– Brand Review
– Communications Strategy
– Brand Guidelines
– Sense of Place Toolkit
In addition to the above brand documents Splinter has also produced a range of supporting materials and media such as:
– Tourism leaflets
– Local transport maps and timetables
– Website featuring bespoke mapping tools
– Display materials
Following on from the award winning Clued up in Hull children and young people’s website, Splinter were asked to design and produce an additional game to add to the ’13 and over’ section of the site. The game was made primarily to inform young people on the various forms of environment related crime that Hull City Council sees as a problem.
It’s split into four mini-games, each dealing with a type of crime, including fly tipping, littering, graffiti and dog fouling. Play the game here.
I have really, really enjoyed working with Splinter; the game was designed exactly how I had originally planned it and the extras they added were very creative. Even at an early stage I knew I had something special that I could show other authorities and will have no problem, I believe, in finding you more work for this type of game for other social landlords.

Following on from the award winning Clued up in Hull children and young people’s website, Splinter were asked to design and produce an additional game to add to the ’13 and over’ section of the site. The game was made primarily to inform young people about the issues surrounding homelessness and to educate them on the best choices to make when attempting to get a job and pay rent.
There are three different characters in the game, each facing a different challenge – from budgeting for how to live alone, the best choice when moving away from parents or the best methods for job hunting. Play the game here.
The Local Work Guarantee is a new scheme offering a different type of opportunity for out of work people in Hull wanting to find long-term employment and employers looking to address skills shortages. Splinter developed an identity for the scheme focussing on the positive outcomes for participants, businesses and the scheme’s partner organisations.
We have produced a wide range of media for the launch including logo & branding development, website, marketing pack, merchandise, launch event materials and advertising solutions. In order to ensure the campaign is believed by stakeholders, and has local relevance, we commissioned new photography of the actual individuals taking part in the scheme, and utilised them throughout.
