Splinter go north of the border!

A bunch of the Splinter team made the trip up to BBC Scotland’s Pacific Quay building in Glasgow yesterday to meet the nice Bitesize folk. We didn’t get to see many of the sights in Glasgow but we were mighty impressed with Central Station, the funky audio pods in the BBC reception, and even the very random Swan and Railway pub we ended up in, back in Wigan on the journey home! All in all a good day out!

The boy done good!

Big congrats go out to Elliott, who did a placement with us last year, for being awarded ‘Best in Show’ at his recent graduation show for his project ‘TwentyFour‘. Best of all, he got to meet Mavis from Coronation Street!

Elliot has a great eye for design and is planning a move to London in the near future, so if there’s any agencies looking for an intern then take a look at a selection of his work below, or over on his new site

A typographic treasure

Whilst rooting around the studio this morning for something to prop a monitor up with, we stumbled across this intriguing book – the Manchester Royal Exchange Directory 1930. No idea why we have it here, but having flicked through we loved the typography and graphic style of the ads within it, so we thought we should share it with the world!

It reminds me of Professor Henry Jones Snr’s grail diary

BBC North is live!

As you may have seen in the news recently, the BBC have started moving into their northern home at MediaCityUK in Salford. It’s a big strategic move for the BBC and we were chuffed when we won the pitch to design and build the new BBC North website. It went live last week, and is full of information about the move, as well as audio & video content, event listings and profiles of a wide variety of BBC staff members.

From a design point of view, it was a great opportunity to dig into the BBC’s new Global Experience Language as well. If you haven’t already seen the GEL, there’s a great article on the BBC blogs.

So a big hello to everyone who is making the move to Salford, and hopefully we’ll get the chance to work with some of you soon!
